Return to Los Erasos

Last night we returned to Los Erasos, eager to find our old students. A handful were waiting for us along the winding path of the barrio, and we chatted outside the room of multiple uses while the others arrived.

Inside the room, we assembled chairs around a table next to the community’s new sewing machines. The space had been recently renovated, with freshly painted walls and new furniture. Sitting around the table, we facilitated a conversation between the brigadistas and Venemergencia. We talked about recruitment and collaboration, and we scheduled activities for the next three weeks, including scenarios, a refresher course, and participation during a health fair this weekend. During the “jornada de salad,” the brigadistas will assist with diabetes and hypertension testing, and will promote the brigade door to door through Los Erasos.

In order to ensure communication during these busy weeks, we are going to launch the SMS system A Tu Lado designed over the summer. The system was recently completed by Venetecnologia, and it will be used presently as a means to communicate within the brigade about times and locations of their meetings. Moreover, it’s an opportunity for all of us to familiarize ourselves with the system and work out any kinks before it’s used in the broader community.

The plan is for the brigade to go live three weeks from today. We have a lot of work to do before then, but everyone is eager and ready to do their part.
