Office Barbecue

The folks at Venemergencia often get together to hang out outside the office. On Saturday, our first day in Caracas, Andres had the crew come over to his place for a barbecue. We got to meet many of them and enjoyed the wonderful view from Andres’ backyard. Our partners from Universidad Simon Bolivar were also there, and we got to finally meet them in the first person. We chatted with paramedics, doctors, lawyers and many others about the culture of service in Venezuela, and the order in which people learn emergency medicine here. For example, the first skill many people learn is to start an IV. Without any license or background in the field, one can enroll in a short course that shows you how to break the skin, draw blood or start a drip. But without knowledge of the body and possible complications that can arise in such procedures, this is extremely dangerous. Hopefully our work can begin to rearrange the steps one takes when entering the field.
The photo above is from Le Club, a local hangout that we went to later that evening. To our left is Dr. Gonzales (aka Andres).
